Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) Rates

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) serves to offset the cost of meals for the soldier. Being married does not influence the BAS rate as it is not intended to cover meals for family members. The BAS allowance stems from a military tradition of providing room and board (meals) for servicemembers and may explain it being separate from basic pay.
